The Greatist Table: 10 Healthy Super Bowl Recipes

by Sophia Breene of The Greatist Table

This weekend is one of the biggest sports events of the year — the Super Bowl. Even people who can’t tell a running back from a piggyback are heading to parties to watch the game, hang out with friends, and most importantly, chow down on Super Bowl fare. Unfortunately for healthy diets, most football snacks are deep-fried, cheese-coated, or both. This year, bring one of these healthy recipes to the party — they’re delicious, easy, and much lighter than traditional versions of game day food.

photo The Greatist Table

Green Beans in a Blanket via Chef Mom
These pigs in a blanket gone green are bound to be a crowd favorite, even among die-hard carnivores. Wrap green beans and a bit of shredded, low-fat cheese in pre-made biscuit dough and bake for 15 minutes.

Baked Honey Garlic Chicken Wings via Salu Salo
It isn’t a football party without BBQ wings. These sweet, garlicky chicken wings are baked, not fried. For fewer calories take off the skin or start with skinless wings.

Vegan Nachos via Healthy Happy Life
Nachos aren’t exactly a health food, but this vegan version is a bit lighter than the mounds of cheese and ground meat found at most restaurants. Feel free to add extra roasted vegetables and trim down the (non-dairy) sour cream and cheese.

Mini Cauliflower Pizza Bites via Dashing Dish
These mini muffins have a cauliflower base, so they’re perfect for gluten-free guests or anyone avoiding carbs. The recipe calls for turkey pepperoni slices, but switch in some roasted peppers, onions, or mushrooms for an extra dose of vegetables.

Roasted Poblano Guacamole via A Finn in the Kitchen
This guac recipe takes a bit more work than just smooshing up a few avocados, but the extra flavor is well worth the effort. The roasted poblano pepper gives this all-star dip some smoky and spicy depth.

Banana, Almond and Chocolate Ice Cream via Girl Cooks World
No party is complete without something sweet at the end. This “ice cream” is actually made of frozen bananas! Blend together frozen banana chunks, almond butter, and chocolate chips together and serve with extra chopped almonds and chocolate on top. For a harder ice cream consistency, stick the mixture back in the freezer for an hour or two.

Baked Mozzarella Sticks via Prevention RD
These healthy mozz sticks are a long way from the greasy diner staple. Instead of breading and deep-frying chunks of cheese, wrap low-fat mozzarella in wonton wrappers and bake them until golden brown. Serve with tomato sauce for some bonus nutrients.

Crispy Kale Chips via Tastefully Julie
Ditch the Doritos and put out a bowl of these (healthy) bad boys instead. To make them, simply wash kale, dress with olive oil and a bit of sea salt, and roast in the oven until crunchy and crispy.

Feta Stuffed Mushrooms via Recipe Girl
These fancy-looking snacks are much easier to make than they appear. Use low-fat feta cheese to get maximum flavor and just a few calories. Goat cheese would work great with these, too.

Four Bean Vegetarian Chili via Crackers on the Couch
Most Super Bowl parties are all about the snacks and appetizers, but this main dish strikes the perfect balance between hearty and healthy. The four types of beans keep guests full, but it’s a bit lighter than a meat stew. Top each bowl with cornbread, avocado, cheese, or whole-wheat crackers.

Congratulations are definitely in order for two of our SIRCUIT®PRO’s (yes … TWO), Pilar DiVittorio & Amy Boyce, who made Washingtonian’s list of Great Day Spas for 2013!! Here’s what they had to say about these fabulous ladies & their MUST-HAVE facials:

Pilar DiVittorio
Bellini Salon Spa Medical Esthetics & Boutique
112 Pleasant St. SW
Vienna, VA
703-255-2555

Open and airy, Bellini Salon Spa Medical Esthetics & Boutique feels just like what you’d hope for in a day spa. But when our tester arrived for a facial at 3:30 on a Friday, she was told that the spa closed early on Fridays—at 4. She was asked to pay—and tip—upfront, as the spa would be closed when she left. The client hadn’t been informed of this policy at the time of booking—six weeks in advance—which seemed strange.

Promptly, she was escorted to a treatment room at the rear. She had booked an Organic Facial ($160) with experienced aesthetician Pilar DiVittorio, former owner of the cult favorite spa Studio Organics. Once our tester was ensconced in her cozy private room, her annoyance began to melt away. She climbed up—yes, there were steps—to a plush treatment bed with warmed sheets and began to relax to soothing music.

DiVittorio conducted a thorough skin analysis, and, midway through the treatment, asked if she’d seen the client before—she said she recalled her skin. She had, several years before. DiVittorio’s arm massage and foot reflexology were delightful, and the facial was very pampering, except for the necessary extractions.

Nearly two hours later, our tester floated out of the treatment room—to find a dark spa. She let herself out the door. Her face had some disconcerting red marks that evening but had cleared by the next morning to reveal fresh, smooth, glowing skin.

Of note: We’d come back anytime for DiVittorio’s decadent facials, but the spa’s strange service left a little to be desired.

Online booking? Yes.

Amy Boyce
Pureskin
4609 Willow La.
Chevy Chase, MD
301-907-6662

Aesthetician Amy Boyce’s “micro-spa” is a white-on-white oasis. It’s just a single room—to enter, you walk through the lobby of a yoga studio—where Boyce offers everything from LED facials ($85 and up) to Endermologie, a lifting and tightening treatment.

Boyce is friendly and chatty, but she knows how to make a client feel relaxed, interspersing medical-grade treatments with pampering massage and soft music. Our reviewer left feeling renewed and, several days later, still had glowing skin.

Of note: Boyce’s is the only Washington-area spa to carry Slim Dome, an infrared sauna that claims to take off pounds and inches in 45 minutes.

Online booking? No.

Here’s a little SIRCUIT® inSPAration to get you through the week!!

Skincare Tip of the Day: Cold Season R&R

Everywhere we turn lately there seems to be someone with a case of the sniffles. And … while SIRCUIT® can’t help you avoid those nasty cold & flu viruses that are in abundance this time of year, we can at least help to make them a bit more bearable with today’s skincare tip of the day.

Skincare Tip of the Day: To prevent the dry, red, flaky skin around your nose that inevitably follows a runny nose, apply a protective barrier balm, such as Sircurity™ to the delicate skin around your nose.

Applying a thin layer of Sircurity™ l repair and recovery balm at the first sniffle (use a cotton swab to avoid contamination), will help to:

  • Relieve dryness, discomfort, and irritation
  • Suppress inflammation & promote healing
  • Calm redness and soothe irritation
  • Hydrate and prevent peeling, chapped skin

As an added bonus, Sircurity™ contains Pau D’Arco & Gotu Kola, which provide  anti-viral & anti-microbial properties (LOVE that)!! Just remember … apply immediately, and re-apply often for best results.
